What Is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture was developed in China thousands of years ago.

It’s the practice of penetrating a needle through specific points on your skin in order to alleviate pain, treat nausea, decrease stress, and help with a variety of other symptoms.

Acupuncture balances the nervous system and increases circulation making it easier for the body to heal itself without the use of medication. Acupuncture works by stimulating points along the body. When thin, sterilized needles are inserted into these acupuncture points, they help balance out the body to restore health. The points chosen coincide with major nerve centers. The needles stimulate the nerves, causing them to release feel-good chemicals known as endorphins.

People in pain often have low levels of endorphins and a release of those endorphins can suppress the sensation of pain. The points are also located near trigger points, spots on the body where pain radiates away from the center when pressed. Acupuncture may ease the stress on trigger points thereby lessening pain in that area.

Does Acupuncture Work?

As Acupuncture has grown in popularity, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Institute of Health (NIH) have performed clinical studies on the effects of acupuncture. These organizations have developed the following theories of how Acupuncture works in easy to understand, modern scientific terms.

It Can Strengthen the Immune System

As Acupuncture has grown in popularity, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Institute of Health (NIH) have performed clinical studies on the effects of acupuncture. These organizations have developed the following theories of how Acupuncture works in easy to understand, modern scientific terms.

Acupuncture has been shown to raise blood levels of white blood cells, prostaglandins, gamma globulin, and overall antibody levels, suggesting that acupuncture has the effect of strengthening the body’s immune system. Subsequently it can be highly effective for the management and even reversal of autoimmune conditions.

Science To Prove It:

study on anxious women found that…

“The results showed that the impaired immune functions in anxious women (chemotaxis, phagocytosis, lymphoproliferation and NK activity) were significantly improved by acupuncture, whereas the increased immune parameters (superoxide anion levels and lymphoproliferation of the patient subgroup showing abnormally high values) were significantly diminished. Acupuncture brought all these immune parameters to or close to the healthy non-anxious control values, exerting not only a merely stimulatory action but a modulatory effect on the immune system”

It Can Increase Blood Circulation

Acupuncture has been shown to increase circulation in the body, especially to the areas adjacent to points being needled. The body will release vasodilators in response to Acupuncture, which is useful in healing injuries, minimizing scar tissues, promoting cell growth and organ function, etc.

Science To Prove It:

recent study found that…

“We found that acupuncture increased the plasma concentrations of nitrate and nitrite in the treated regions, coupled with an increase in blood flow.”

It Can Stimulate the Release of Endorphins

Acupuncture is extremely effective in pain management because it stimulates the release of endorphins, which are the body’s natural painkillers. Endorphins are believed to be 10x stronger than morphine, the strongest pharmaceutical painkiller available.

Science To Prove It:

“A combination of the two frequencies produces a simultaneous release of all four opioid peptides, resulting in a maximal therapeutic effect. This finding has been verified in clinical studies in patients with various kinds of chronic pain including low back pain and diabetic neuropathic pain.”

It Can Raise Levels of Important Neurotransmitters

Acupuncture has been shown to affect neurotransmitter levels such as the “happy hormone” serotonin. Low serotonin levels are associated with insomnia, depression, sugar cravings, obesity, addiction, and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). By raising serotonin to normal levels, Acupuncture can prevent or fight off these problems. It can also explain why people feel great after a treatment.

Science To Prove It:

The Journal For Acupuncture Therapy For Neurological Diseases discovered that…

“It is reasonable to presume that acupuncture is capable of modulating the brain functions through the regulation of central neurotransmitters/modu-lators, because all the acupuncture-influenced neurotransmitters/modulators participate directly or indirectly in neural regulation in almost all aspects.”

Acupuncture Points - How Does Acupuncture Work?

Ancient Chinese medicine practitioners found what are now called “acu-points” – these are areas that lie along the meridian or channels of our body.

It has been found that our body carries energy – and there are channels for this energy. Specifically, there are certain points on our body where energy can build up or where more energy flows through.

So, the acupuncturist knows of these “acu-points” – now what?

Certain acu-points can be used for particular reasons.

Some are channels for reducing stress and anxiety. Some are highly interconnected with the relief of lower back pain.

So, depending on the symptoms that you’re having, the acupuncturist will insert 4-10 needles into your skin at specific points. When inserted into the skin, the body often goes through a process of releasing endorphins, targeting the specific areas for healing, and more.

Then, the needles will stay in your skin for between 10-30 minutes, depending on the end result that the acupuncturist is hoping to receive.

Does Acupuncture Hurt?

Remember, everybody is different. So, for some people, something might be very painful while for others it is not painful at all.

With this being said, it is usually very uncommon for acupuncture to be painful. For most people, it is not painful or uncomfortable.
