Heart Health Problems in Las Vegas

Reduce Risk of Heart Disease

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. The American Heart Association estimated the total cost of cardiovascular disease in 2015 exceeded $320 billion. It is largely preventable with diet and exercise.

Unfortunately, cardiovascular disease is one of the most misdiagnosed and mistreated conditions in medicine. Over the past decade science has learned a tremendous amount regarding what causes heart disease, but the medical establishment is still operating on outdated science from over 40 years ago.

For example, it is a now well established in the scientific literature that eating cholesterol in the diet has no discernible impact on serum cholesterol levels in most people. Even if it did, the level of cholesterol in the blood is not the driving factor behind heart disease.

Organizations like the National Lipid Association are working hard to raise awareness of these new developments but most of the general public and healthcare profession still are operating in the old paradigm.

Identify risk factors, advanced cardiometaboic testing, leptin, insulin, blood sugar, thyroid function testing, eval for infections, intestinal permeability, and environmental toxins, blood pressure, weight, and waist-to-hip ratio.

Treatment begins with dietary recommendation of a low-carbohydrate Paleo diet and intermittent fasting (with high LDL-P due to insulin resistance) or Mediterranean Paleo diet (with high LDL-P due to genetic causes). Lifestyle interventions such as managing stress daily, sleeping for eight hours per night, exercising, and heart-healthy nutritional supplementation.

Heart Disease Symptoms

Symptoms of heart disease vary by individual. Some may be obvious while others may be completely unnoticeable.

  • Heart attack: Chest pain or discomfort, upper back or neck pain, indigestion, heartburn, nausea or vomiting, extreme fatigue, upper body discomfort, dizziness, and shortness of breath.
  • Arrhythmia: Fluttering feelings in the chest (palpitations).
  • Heart failure: Shortness of breath, fatigue, or swelling of the feet, ankles, legs, abdomen, or neck veins.

If you’re experiencing a medical emergency, please call 911 immediately.

High cholesterol is also a common symptom (not a disease). It is a sign of an underlying problem. If you are given a drug to decrease your cholesterol without investigating the cause, it is suppressing symptoms instead of improving function. Cholesterol-lowering drugs may be necessary for some, but the initial step should be to investigate any root causes contributing to the symptom.

Heart Disease Risk Factors

High blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, and smoking are key risk factors for heart disease. About half of people in the United States (47%) have at least one of these three risk factors.2 Several other medical conditions and lifestyle choices can also put people at a higher risk for heart disease, including

  • Diabetes
  • Overweight and obesity
  • Unhealthy diet
  • Physical inactivity
  • Excessive alcohol use

Many of these risk factors are a direct result of lifestyle. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can significantly decrease your risk for developing heart disease.
